Age is a significant risk factor. The plantar fascia, like most connective tissue, loses elasticity and becomes less resilient with age. The condition is most prevalent in adults between 40 and 60 years old, though it can certainly occur in younger patients, particularly those with high activity levels.
Body weight plays a direct mechanical role. Every pound of body weight translates to several times that force across the plantar fascia during normal walking. Patients who are overweight or obese place substantially higher repetitive loads on this tissue, which accelerates the micro-tearing process at the heart of the condition.
Foot structure matters considerably. Patients with flat feet, meaning low or absent arches, tend to overpronate during gait, which increases the tensile strain on the plantar fascia.
